Message received!

Have you ever received a message from your animal? Chances are that you didn’t realize it, but still you acted on it. The day you decided to go on a leisurely trail ride instead of working in the ring. Or you decide to feed your dog an hour early because he is giving you “that look.” You may have even come home from the animal shelter with a senior dog instead of the puppy you had planned to adopt. Were these your ideas or...?

The following is a true story of an SOS sent off from hundreds of miles away with a very specific, and unexpected, intent. It was captured in a lovely children’s book, Jump the Moon. But there is more to the story than what is seen in the beautifully illustrated pages.

The plot is familiar to many love stories. Girl meets Pony, Girl and Pony love each other, Girl loses Pony. In this case, rather than pining away for a lifetime, the girl moves on to college, career, marriage, living a busy woman’s life without even a thought of ponies.

And then.... the pony begins showing up in her dreams sending this SOS: “I need help! Come find me!” The dreams are so unrelenting that the young woman is compelled to take on the impossible task of looking for a pony she last saw years ago and hundreds of miles away. She does all she can to find her pony. The trail eventually runs out and still No Pony. The young woman, discouraged, gives up.

Fortunately the last person she contacted, Pat, is touched by the story and continues the search. One day she is able to locate the pony. She is able to return the pony to the young woman, who had loved her so much, so long ago.

It’s a lovely story with a lovely ending, but there is more to it than is published in the book. The poor pony had been through a bad situation and had become mean. When Pat arrived to pick up the pony the owner, afraid of the pony, planned to chase her from the stall with brooms, but Pat wouldn’t allow it. Instead she entered the stall and spoke softly to the pony. The pony responded to her kindness and eagerly jumped into her horse trailer. She was returned to the young woman and spent the remaining years of her life with her.

How did this happen? How did the pony transmit her dire need to the person most likely to help her? She sent out a beacon of distress and was even able to lead her rescuers to her location.

I had the wonderful fortune recently to meet the author of the story—the mother of the girl featured. That’s when I learned “the rest of the story” and we both marveled at how the pony was able to communicate her need across the years and miles to stage her own rescue.

You don’t need to be a professional Animal Communicator or even believe such a thing exists to receive messages from your animals. Perhaps it’s that slight headache you feel when you approach your dog, that resolves when you walk away but you later realize he’s not feeling well. Or that flash of a memory of cantering through the woods that you get when preparing to ride your horse. It works in reverse as well! Imagine a perfect show experience, complete with ribbons, and the shared feeling of pride and accomplishment you both have afterwards. Your animal can share that vision with you.

And in the meantime, you might want to see this lovely book for yourself. It’s a great story for all ages. And, if you’re like me, you might want to have some tissues handy.
